Boots fails after upgrade to edgy if using generic or 686 kernel

Bug Description

I updated my system from dapper to edgy.

Now I can't boot my computer if I try to use the kernel I used in dapper (2.6.15-27-686) or the newest generic kernel the system installed during the update (2.6.17-10-generic).

I can, however, boot my system if I choose a 386 kernel (2.6.17-10-386).

The last error messages I get are (while running in recovery mode):

/etc/mdadm/mdadm.con: No such file or directory
Waiting for root file system

But nothing happens. I can reboot my computer using ctrl-alt-del (the system shutdowns normally)

Thank you.

Please attach dmesg output from a working kernel or live CD.

Ok, the generic kernels don't produce any dmesg, I get a "Waiting for root filesystem" and then I'm thrown to a command line and I can't find any kind of log (the /log contains only a lock file).

This is the dmesg from my working 386 kernel.

Thank you

Same for me, generic edgy kernel does not work, I think a 686 kernel does not even exist anymore, but 386 kernel works.

Generic kernel stops booting after my serial ATA HDD has been found. Last message is: "ACPI: PCI interupt something ...."

The edgy kernel seems to have some more weird issues by the way! Link not even powering off your system on some platforms. See: https://launchpad.net/bugs/43961

I've got similar issue with a fresh install of Edgy

2.6.17-10-generic kernel:
* booting is really slow (2-3 minutes) and seems to hang a while on mounting root file system
* gnome (animations) are really choppy when I start heavy applications (like openoffice or wesnoth,...)

Then I install 2.6.17-10-i386 kernel:
* everything is fine!

This might be confusing for newbies since -generic is the default kernel

Specs:
Sony Vaio VGN-FS315
Intel centrino
Integrated intel graphic card
512MB RAM
Ubuntu Edgy on a dual boot with XP on the first two partitions
