Floppy 1

Bug Description

I have just installed the newly released Edgy Eft on two machines, that both have a 3 1/2" floppy drive.

If I go to "Places->Computer", I see two icons:

"Floppy 1"
"Floppy Drive"

The "Floppy Drive" icon seems to be the proper icon to the floppy drive, double clicking mounts a floppy disk.

The "Floppy 1" icon seems to be something that does not belong there, right clicking this icon and selecting "properties" for this icon, informs me this item points to "/"?? Double clicking this icon comes up with the error:

Unable to mount the selected floppy drive

mount: /dev/ is not a block device

This bug has happened so far on all Edgy installs I have performed, I have found this is caused because Edgy places the following line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/ /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

It can be fixed by commenting out or removing this line. I do not know the purpose of this line as the floppy drive works perfectly fine with this line commented out.

If this line is commented out, the "Floppy 1" icon will disappear after a reboot and just leave a "Floppy Drive" icon there, which works perfectly.

Thanks for the bug report. I'm guessing you'd like to know why that line was placed there, and if it can be safely removed.

What sort of hardware was this on?

I think this could possibly always occur, but possibly if Edgy was installed with a floppy drive present as all PC's I have tested it on have had floppy drives. Please note I have used the 32-bit version of Edgy on all PC's.

PC1: Athlon 64 3200+, MSI Kn9 Neo NForce 550, 1Gb Dual DDR2 800, 256Mb Leadtek GeForce 7950 GT, 160Gb SATA 2 HDD, DVD +RW (Primary IDE master), ZIP 100 (Primary IDE slave)

PC2: Athlon 2500+, Gigabyte NForce 2 400 chipset (I believe), 1Gb Dual DDR 400, 256Mb Gigabyte GeForce 7600 GS AGP, 160Gb SATA 2 HDD, DVD +RW (Primary IDE master)

PC3: Pentium III 800, Plain vanilla Intel Desktop board 815, 256Mb PC133, Intel 815 onboard video, 20Gb HDD (Primary IDE Master), CD-RW (Secondary IDE Master)

PC4: Celeron 800, MSI Intel 810 motherboard, 256Mb PC133, 32Mb Gainward GeForce 2 MX 400 PCI, 8Gb HDD (Primary IDE Master), CD (Secondary IDE Master)

As you can see, a wide variety of computers, the main thing in common is that all have had a floppy drive in them at the time of install, but I am unsure as I have not tested it yet on a machine without floppy drive.
