Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

In the Xorg.log file. I got :

(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitDAL failed
(EE) fglrx(0): R200PreInit failed

I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 AMD 64 with an ATI 9700 PRO card.

I had follow the documentation in the wiki to install the driver :

You have now 3D aceleration. In ubuntu-es.org one man have the same problem with 9250

I find this in Gentoo-wiki

 PreInitDAL failed

Disable framebuffer in kernelconfig, recompile, reboot! This happend as i upgraded from 8.28.8 to 8.32.5.

This error may also occur after receiving the EDID information: There is a known bug [2] which has been solved in the 8.32.5. Also, just upgrading to 8.32.5 solved the problem.

rmh3093 reported running vbtetool vgamode prior to starting gdm will fix X crashing with framebuffer See post.

The bug fix in 9600 and newer when use driver>8.32.5

the bug not fix In 9200 and older because use driver= 8.28.8
