Bug Description

On approximately one reboot in every five, after upgrading to 6.10, there are no keyboard functions available.
The login screen appears, but I can't type in a username.
There is no console access via ctrl-alt-F1 either.
All I can do is reboot (via the mouse.)
On successful boots there seems to be no instability, all appears normal. There was never any such problem for me with Dapper Drake.
There is no difference at all between dmesg output between a successful reboot and a reboot which freezes the keyboard (the latter obtained via sshd.) Here is the dmesg output, for what it's worth:

Looks like rebooting with the pre-upgrade kernel ( 2.6.15-27-386 #1 PREEMPT Sat Sep 16 01:51:59 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux) sidesteps this problem.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you in the latest kernel in Hardy?
Also, how is you keyboard connected? Bluetooth?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your response.

This problem continues to affect every subsequent kernel update for me, not just the one I originally reported.

My current kernel:
[17179569.184000] Linux version 2.6.17-12-386 (root@terranova) (gcc version 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-13ubuntu5)) #2 Tue Feb 12 01:14:09 UTC 2008 (Ubuntu 2.6.17-12.44-386)

However, it turns out that I only see it when I've got a USB mouse plugged in. My keyboard was, and remains, PS2, but the mouse gets swapped from time to time. Whenever a USB mouse is used, I've got a 50% or more chance of this problem occurring during any boot.

I have not upgraded beyond Edgy, so cannot comment on Hardy.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New".
