Bug Description

While trying to install ubuntu 6.10, after showing a loading screen, the screen goes and stays black. This also occurs in safe graphics mode. The same going black behavior also occurs after an install via the alternative install CD. I needed to install commercial video card drivers by ssh to get X.
Computer is:
Athlon 64 3000+
1GB RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB RAM

It's important information that the machine is still alive and reachable by ssh, this was not clear yet from the reports in bug #67487. Can you please provide log files, Xorg.0.log and check other system logs like /var/log/kern.log and attach to the other bug? Is your card an AGP one?
