Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

A routine update/upgrade failed to install and told me I needed to do a dist upgrade. I'm already at Edgy so I was a bit sceptical. I tried it and it told me it couldn't calculate the upgrade and to report it as a bug.

Mr Vogt: looks like a duplicate of bug # 67182 . As per my comments there + this bug, I think that bug report should be reopened and confirmed?

I'm currently having the same problem. I did install the Beryl window manager, but I don't think I have the beta nvidia drivers. Anyway, you might want to check for yourself:

$ dpkg -l nvidia-glx
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold

Yes, I have Beryl and the Nvidia beta drivers.

Same issue here upgrading from Dapper to Edgy. I also have beryl and nvidia-glx-dev installed.
Here is the relevant part of the main.log

2006-11-23 11:18:52,002 DEBUG The package 'nvidia-glx-dev' is marked for removal but it's in the removal blacklist
2006-11-23 11:19:14,603 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'A essential package would have to be removed'

Attempted on a Dapper > Edgy Upgrade. cdupgrade only no netwrok access. Partial Xubuntu installation with Beryl and nvidia 1.0.8776+2.6.15.12-1.
