Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-pack-kde-fr-base

In (K)Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 Kdevelop is not translated in French because those files are missing in language-pack-kde-fr-base :

kdevelop.mo
kdevtipofday.mo
kdevdesigner.mo
desktop_kdevelop.mo

and maybe some others...

Note that those files are present in the kde-i18n-fr package from this repository: http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355/

This bug seems to affect also Dapper users.

System: Kubuntu Edgy 6.10
Package: language-pack-kde-fr-base_6.10+20061019_all.deb

I can confirm this and some actions of the right-click menu of konqueror are not translated too.

I really don't know what French Translators could do as there's no translation templates for Kdevelop in Rosetta (or at least i'm not able to find it )

kdevelop is part of universe, and we currently don't support translations for universe (we have plans to support it, and have flirted with it in the past, but we're simply not there yet).

(for konqueror right-click menu stuff, I we'd want a new bug if it's actually affecting Rosetta)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, Ubuntu gets its translations from the translations portion of Launchpad (http://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/), where translation teams work on making Ubuntu more useful in their language. If you want to change a translation in Ubuntu there is the right place.

Sebastian Rode: the problem is that kdevelop is in universe and can't be translated with rosetta, and it's not required since it's already translated upstream

Basically, this is a problem in the way we handle language packs and how KDE ship translations...

Kdevelop is in universe, and thus, we cannot handle its translations in Launchpad.

Kdevelop translations come from kde-i18n-* packages which sources are in main and thus, we strip the files out so KDE uses the ones coming from Launchpad as part of language packs, but given that Kdevelop is in universe, those files are lost.

The proper solution for this is to push https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/language-packs-for-universe spec forward.

A possible workaround would be to keep universe packages' translations unstripped in kde-i18n-* packages.

To the extent it can be fixed, it should be fixed. Universe translations are included within the packages and come from upstream.
