Bug Description

I've noticed, that in Ubuntu main there is only one, buggy (look at lots of crash-reports in launchpad) and unmaintained graphical ftp client - gftp. Gftp was abandoned by upstream - the latest version is almost 2 year old ! Besides this, gftp is not user-friendly :(

I think, that such buggy and unmaintained software shouldn't be in Ubuntu main, gftp should be removed from the main. Better ftp client, like filezilla (look at http://www.filezilla-project.org ) could be in the main instead.

Filezilla is very popular on Windows OS and upcoming version - 3.0 is multiplatform, there are already debian packages in unstable since late October 2006.

Well there are only 15 open bugs against gftp in launchpad. Late October 2006 isn't very long for main rather than universe. There are plenty of ftp packages in universe.

According to http://gftp.seul.org/ the last release was April 2005 - so 18 months ago. This doesn't mean it's been abandoned - it's officially stable.

This is not a bug report: its someone's opinion. This sort of thing should not be allowed to clog up a bug reporting system. I suggest delete this out of the system.

Thanks for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or forum. <http://www.ubuntu.com/community/forums/> might be a good start.

Closing this bug.

Hello!

Because [1] is available no more (ERROR 404 - NF) I post a comment in here. My recent post in #ubuntu was the following:

<Aquina> I don't wanna be a nag but why is gFTP still unavailable with compiled SSL? It's no prob for me to do it but the n00bs out there probably can't. You think I should file that on launchpad? Yes, no, maybe? :-)
<beuno> Aquina, yes

I also heard a lot of good things about FileZilla. Honestly I never used the program but I'm gonna give it a try. gFTP indeed crashed some times on my system. I'm not a n00b. It's really a bit buggy. I'm gonna download the symbold and debug it ASAP. Nevertheless I think at least an alternative should be considered because the project is not so active and there are better alternatives out there.

From my standpoint of vie a fixed gFTP with FTPS compiled by default would be ok too. I mainly care about functionality.

Both gftp and filezilla are in universe as of Karmic. No GUI based FTP client is installed by default.
