Bug Description

Binary package hint: audacity

After upgrading from Dapper to Edgy, all UI text is missing from audacity (except a few things like window title, numbers, status bar caption). So for example, all menus are blank. If it's relevant I'm using British English on a x86 machine.

I am running into the same issue on my box.
If I rm ~/.audacity I get an unknown popup when starting audacity. Selecting the default option will bring up a font chooser file dialog. (attached screenshot)

I have the same issue

I have been googling all around and found some hints about gtkrc being the culprit and how to configure certain font settings in gtkrc. Unfortunately none of those hints helped. I'd really appreciate if someone would look into this because other well-used gtk1 apps like xmms are (at least partially) affected as well.

Me too (Spanish after upgrading Dapper to Edgy). It's a very annoying bug. Some of the programs affected: Audacity, Ardour, all the loki installers (so many games can't be installed/updated)

Hmm... Does anyone know who we might subscribe for some insight on such an issue? Surely there's someone who would have a clue as to why this would occur (?).

It affects even NeroLINUX... other than Xmms, Audacity, and some others as well.
I'm using Kubuntu, but when I switch session from KDE desktop to Gnome desktop I can see all the UI text...

It sounds, to me, like this is a problem with GTK 1.x-based applications; Audacity, Ardour, XMMS, and NeroLinux all use the old 1.x series of GTK, to the best of my knowledge. Let's re-assign it to the gtk+1.2 package to see if we can find someone with some insight into the problem.

Oh, and, are you *all* seeing these problems only when running under KDE? i.e., does this problem also occur under Gnome, for anyone?

I installed the gnome-desktop package *after* upgrading from kubuntu dapper tu kubuntu edgy. I don't see this problem under Gnome. I also changed theme from the default one to Aero (downloaded from gnome-look.org) to see if this would have fixed the problem under KDE. I still don't see anything, but in Gnome I see all the UI text with the new theme.

seeing the above issues under a minimal xfce desktop under edgy. Dist-upgrade from dapper. Apps affected are xmmx, nerolinux, nwn installer.

Solution at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+1.2/+bug/62300 does not work, as well as here : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+1.2/+bug/65708
