Bug Description

The current OpenAFS 1.4.x series is showing its age, and upstream’s attention to this branch is stagnating. For example, as of now, support for kernel 2.6.38 is only available for 1.6.x (see bug #675768).

I’ve been using the 1.5.x/1.6.x client from ppa:openafs/master on my laptop for almost a year (on lucid, maverick and natty), a production web server (hardy), and a heavily loaded remote login server (lenny), and it’s worked well. Now that a stable 1.6.0 release is weeks away, I think this is the right time to give it wider testing in natty. If that means we also happen to get a package that builds at all against natty’s kernel, well, that’s a happy coincidence. :-)

Here’s a 1.6.0~pre2 package for natty that’s identical to the one I made for ppa:openafs/master (modulo changelog and Maintainer), based on Russ Allbery’s 1.6.0~pre1 package in Debian experimental.

builds (in pbuilder), installs, does the DKMS stuff against the natty kernel, and runs ok. populates /afs and i can read files (not tested beyond that)

i get
RXAFS_GetCapabilities failed with code 105
in dmesg. not sure what it means

I got some responses from upstream developers, who actually think that we should stay with 1.4.x for natty, so let’s hold off on this for now:

[11:50:22] <<email address hidden>/owl> Offhand, a spring release probably ought to stick with 1.4.x.

[13:41:06] <Simon Wilkinson> With regards to 1.4.14 vs 1.6.0. I think a distro shipping this spring probably wants to stick with the 1.4.x branch.

seen as openafs 1.4.x has been fixed for new kernels, and 1.6.x is not ready enough for natty, this bug can be closed.
