Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

It would be very nice if Adept would uninstall unneeded dependencies when the package depending on them is removed, the way aptitude does. (Like making Adept use aptitude instead of apt-get?)

I would like adept manage packages which are installed automatically due to dependencies like aptitude, that is, mark them as automatically installed and when they aren't needed remove them.

With aptitude when I install a package and it has to download some dependencies, these packages are marked as automatically installed, and afterthat if I uninstall it, those packages are removed.

This is probably 3.0 material, due to limited timeframe and libapt-pkg's current nonsupport for this.

How far are we from 3.0 version?

How far = now probably a year or so, considering my rather limited time.

Michael ther eis a purge option in adept, that is similar to complete removal in synaptic. Is that not what you were looking for? It removes depends sort of the way aptitude does. I dont think using aptitude is the best idea for a GUI package manager, but the purge should act the same way.

I will have a look later (don't currently have a Ubuntu box to hand). I take it that purge is still not automatic though. And is it different from apt-get's purge option? I seem to recall that that just removes the package with its config files.

adept does not autoremove unneeded depends the 'automagic' way, no.

If you're interested in getting this functionality implemented, please file a bug upstream at bugs.kde.org and/or write up a spec. First check whether the idea is already registered <https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+specs>, and if so, contact the specification's drafter about your ideas. Otherwise, you can start writing a spec yourself. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications>

Note that apt-get now also seems to have this functionality - it will flag up unneeded dependencies which are left after you have uninstalled a package.

And adept is flagging like installed automatically, but it isn't using autoremove to clean dependencies. Although you add APT::Get::AutomaticRemove "true"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf packages which was automatically installed are not uninstalled when they're not used, and apt-get does that.

Synaptic does this automatically. I think there should be no technical difficulty in implementing this. It has already been more than an year but this is still absent.

Unfortunately, Adept has been unmaintained by its original authors for several years, and nobody has stepped up to continue its development. (Though the Muon Suite is arguably its spiritual successor) As such, Adept has been removed from releases of Kubuntu from 12.10 onwards, and no additional improvements will be made to the software.

We thank you for reporting this bug all the same, and apologize for taking so long to respond to it.
