xmms won't launch in Edgy

After I upgraded to 6.10, I noticed (initially via streamtuner) that xmms wasn't launching. Here's what I get in a terminal:

~$ xmms
Message: device: default
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 2518 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0

When I just get this line, xmms runs somewhere in the background and becomes a major resource hog, but never shows itself or plays anything. The other (more common) option is this:

~$ xmms
Message: device: default
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 2518 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 2519 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0

In this scenario it never launches at all. Thanks for any help.
