Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-live

I have no sound in Feisty 7.04 (for some reason I had to choose 'dont know' from the menu option since it would recognise 'Feisty 7.04'!!
Anyway - my sound works fine with the headphones so this is a bit strange.
Not sure if this is a bug, but wanted to report it to someone, since I also have no sound in Edgy 6.10, and nor on the live Cd of Dapper.

Am running a Tecra A8 with intel / Realtek ALS262 soundthing.

All Alsamixer settings are correct - the PC is picking up the modules etc. (clearly since the headphones work), and I've tried everything in the wiki-HOWTO on snd-hda-intel stuff.

Was really hoping that Feisty would give me sound - but was not to be!

Best,

Steve

Please clarify whether you mean that sound via speakers is inaudible (whereas via headphones is audible) in 7.04. It's confusing to say "I have no sound...my sound works fine with the headphones".

Sorry - I mean that there is no sound at all from the speakers - although the headphones work fine. given that its a pain to sit there with headphones on - to all intents and purposes this means that I effectively have 'no sound'.

Hope this helps but if you need more details - lspci etc. then please let me know.

Steve

Not to be anal, but "no sound from speakers" is not the same as "no sound". What you're experiencing is a jack sense bug. Please attach, to this bug report, the information requested[0].

Not sure what Kernel version it has, but still nothing!

Thanks for trying,

To find out your kernel version issue this command in a terminal windows:
uname -r

Thanks for this, and for all you effort.
Unfortunately I am not running Feisty, but was just trying out the livecd in the hope that it might sort the sound problem. Will the new kernel be in the next release of Feisty, since this will be the only way I can try it?

Thanks again

I am having an identical problem with my Toshiba Tecra M7. In my case, however, I notice that the sound through the headphones is quieter (as in much quieter) than Windows through headphones at the same volume. Through speakers, I find myself having to crank the amplifier a bit to get any good level of sounding to come through. Appears to be something in the system keeping the volume controls low and out of our conrol as I have everything in alsamixer and in the GUI's volume controls maxed.

For the record, I am running Feisty Herd 5 from a clean install.

Maybe sometrhing to do with bug 72908?

I'm assuming the 'fix' was in the latest kernel update 2.6.20.12?
If so, it stll doesn't work.
Do I have to do anything or would the update sort the problem?

I can confirm this bug on a Toshiba Tecra A8-ez8313 running Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron with kernel 2.6.24-17-386.

I have to use the headphone port to hear any audio output. I can control it with the external volume toggle or the Volume control from the Panel. When I unplug the headphones, there is exactly ZERO sound coming from the two built-in speakers.

Adding the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=hippo

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Should fix this problem for many people having this problem.
If not then you could try a different model.

Executing the following command in a terminal will append the above mentioned line to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configuration file.

sudo echo "options snd-hda-intel model=hippo" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
