Bug Description

Sliding the master volume control on the gnome-panel or in the Volume Control dialogue does nothing.

I have an onboard intel audio chipset, it appears as an Intel ICH5:

dmesg|grep ICH5
[17179573.336000] ICH5: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:1f.1
[17179573.336000] ICH5: chipset revision 2
[17179573.336000] ICH5: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

To me, this is not a duplicate of bug #45345

I have the problem under Ubuntu 7.10 with an Intel ICH7 sound controller.

I see a "master" entry in amixer, so the issue is not about the "front" input used instead of "master" :

$ amixer
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 30
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 30 [100%] [-1.50dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 30 [100%] [-1.50dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 255
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Line-In',0
  Capabilities: cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
  Capture channels: Mono
  Mono: Capture [off]
Simple mixer control 'Mic Bypass',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 30
  Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [off]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 14
  Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [0.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [0.00dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'ExtMic',0
  Capabilities: cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
  Capture channels: Mono
  Mono: Capture [on]

I have tried building the alsa drivers from source (1.0.15-rc3) but it didn't help.
The issue has been there for a few weeks now, can't really remember exactly when it started though but it definitely started under Ubuntu 7.10
