Bug Description

This happens in many applications, the easiest to reproduce is under Firefox;

  1. Load Firefox
  2. Maximise Firefox (Launcher will hide if not already hidden)
  3. Open a tall page in Firefox (eg. http://lwn.net/daily )
  4. Scroll the page vertically

What happens:

  5. There is a visible tearing a where the right-hand edge of the Launcher would be if it had not been hidden.

What should happen:

  6. Ideally a hidden Launcher should not cause glitches in application windows that it is (not) covering.

=======Original Report=========

When I scroll in a program (tested with firefox 4.0.1 and nautilus) the left part of the screen (the part where the "unity launcher" shows up) scrolls a bit delayed, which creates a tearing effect. I use the newest ccc ati driver.

I can confirm the same on nVidia card. It happens only with proprietary driver.

This affects me also on both of my computers with ATI and Intel graphics.

Mostly on web pages using Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350.
This I think is a Gallium driver problem as before release I could blacklist this driver and the tearing stopped.
 ( just as a note, since release, I cannot find a way to blacklist this driver.)

are you sure this does not happen in Ubuntu Classic session with compiz as the window manager?

I have an ATI Radeon HD4890 and am also having the same problem. It doesn't happen in an Ubuntu Classic session; I am fairly certain that it is somehow caused by Unity's launcher since the area affected seems to be the same size as the launcher. If I scroll using the scrollbar or even by click-dragging the mousewheel there doesn't seem to be a problem.
While it has been most noticeable in Firefox, I have tried it in other applications and it seems to happen to a lesser extent in some of them.

This also happens for me, in firefox and gedit, but only when i use the mouse scroll wheel.

I've been having this problem too. Disabling vsync and auto detect refresh rate, then bumping the refresh rate to 60 in the Compiz Config seems to have solved it for me.

Hi, I have the same issue, I'm using an Nvidia card. It happens in both Natty and Oneiric.
Disabling OpenGL > Sync to VBlank in CCSM makes the videos tearing.
The launcher tearing doesn't happen in Ubuntu-2d.

I'm also having this issue (Nvidia card, GTX 470). The same effect also happens when playing a flash video or other hardware accelerated video behind the foreground window.

Interestingly, the same also happens in Windows 7, which makes me suspect that this is a proprietary driver issue or hardware overlay issue.

is that still an issue in Ubuntu 12.04?
