Can you post the content of mysql configuration file (/etc/mysql/my.cnf) ?

Did you make any change to the file during the upgrade (like merge the maintainer version of the file) ?

I'm attaching two my.conf files:
my.cnf is the actual mysql configuration
my.cnf.dpkg-old is the old one

ls -la /etc/mysql/my.*
