Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

On all 3 systems where I have installed Ubuntu Natty I've seen this bug. At seemingly random points in time, the Unity launcher will stop autohiding, obscuring both maximized applications and "windowed" applications that sit under the launcher. I'm typically running Emacs and Opera, so perhaps this combination is relevant.

Today I've discovered that toggling the Num Lock state on the keyboard makes the launcher hide. This seems to make no sense, but it is what I observe.

Found no likely duplicates that were still open. unity package is at 3.8.12-0ubuntu1

I can confirm using a different combination of programs and drivers: here on Ubuntu 11.04 x64, it-IT i18n, with Firefox, Chrome, Chromium, Quassel, emesene, Empathy, skype open.
Going to add information from apport.
ùToggling bloc num does remove the problem, but if I toggle it on again, the problem waits a few seconds and is here again.

The problem happens when with Opera to do the drag and drop of a link in a web page.
If i drag and drop a link from a page with the mouse, Unity appears and it disappear away anymore.

I'm also confirming, however in my case the keys that trigger the bug are caps lock and alt-shift (keyboard layout change). The bug occurs at random intervals and doesn't reproduce after logging out and in again. I'm usually running Opera+Banshee+Lyx applications.

The sequence of events typically triggering the bug are:
1. Press caps lock/alt-shift
2. Left-click a random application on launcher
3. Maximize ANY running application -> launcher doesn't autohide
4. Press caps lock/alt-shift -> launcher hides

I am also experiencing this, but I am not running Opera.

The times I've experienced it, I have had the following applications open:
Firefox, GEdit, Terminal and Libreoffice Calc (each maximized on a seperate workspace).
It always happend after moving around the workspaces with <ctrl>+<alt>+Arrow.

"unity --replace" does not fix this, but toggling Num Lock, does fix it.

Ignore the part in my comment #5 about it happening after switching workspaces.

I'm able to reproduce it, although it doesn't always happen:
1. In Firefox, go to launchpad.net (or any other page with a normal textbox).
2. In the search box on the page, double-click the search box a couple of times (you'll see that the Unity launcher keeps moving in and out).
3. Sometimes Unity launcher doesn't hide when it shows from the action in step 2.

I can confirm it happens with me as well, typically when dragging something within a program such as Mendeley or OpenOffice. Toggling Num Lock key does indeed solve the problem.

This is, as it seems, a duplicate of bug #769703 but I'm not sure whether I should mark this as a duplicate because then it wouldn't appear on the search results anymore. I think I will, nonetheless, mark it as a duplicate and leave a comment about the Num Lock solution in the older bug.
