octave3.0 failed to install: octave-3.0.5: error while loading shared libraries: liblapack.so.3gf: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

the distribution upgrade failed after running for a few hours, suggested my system might be unstable and that is hould file a bug report, hence this. system was kubuntu 10.04 running on a T61, using a pae kernel (the default server kernel) in order to make use of 4G of ram.
