Bug Description

When I start update-manager after upgrading today, I get the following message:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.'

And the list of available packages is blank, but the window says I can upgrade 45 packages (same with the launcher icon).

An 'apt-get upgrade' works as expected however.

/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log reports a number of broken packages when I try to upgrade, eg compiz and unity (which have been installed from natty-updates or natty-proposed).

For me the problem turned out to be a multiarch upgrade issue. After removing ia32-libs (sudo apt-get remove ia32-libs, which of course removed all the 32 bit apps from my system) it worked.

I recently upgraded to Oneiric, and am having this same problem, including being able to run apt-get upgrade without a problem. I also have a large number of packages listed as broken in my apt.log, and in the most recent entry (from yesterday) are errors from NvidiaDetection and an error from Brasero saying that it's not upgradable.
