Bug Description

Had just run an update / upgrade.
Noticed some unity files were updated and some unity files were updated.
Went to reboot, and noticed that the 'gear indicator' in the top right corner was missing and the me menu did not contain any log off, or shutdown options.
The launcher on the left side of the screen popped out, but would not scroll, after a short time, the error message was displayed.
As far as I knew I was running normal unity, not unity 2d

Description: Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release: 11.10

unity-2d-launcher:
  Installed: 4.8.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4.8.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4.8.0-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expected to be able to select to shutdown my system, failing that I expected to launch a terminal from the launcher in order to issue the reboot command.

Instead, the launcher froze and the error message was displayed.
