Bug Description

After running for a bit, there appears a blank space in my KDE taskbar. It is almost like there is some hidden task there that just doesn't show up. New tasks will open below it (I'm running the taskbar on the left side).

I've done a quick screen grab video showing the problem in action:

I also have a staic screen shot:

Check do you have the same problem with smooth tasks
There are multiple bug reports in bugs.kde.org, so check them out

I only found one bug related to smooth tasks: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281401

It looks very different. For one it is a crash. I don't see a crash, just the above glitch in the UI.

I think we didn't understood ourselves - i suggested you try replacing default task manager with smooth tasks and see if the problem persists , and also to check KDE bugs to find is there a similar/same problem as yours (with the default task manager)

This is "Bug 278891 - a program closed after dragging to another desktop creates empty space on taskbar" on kde available at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278891.

As you can see the bug has been closed as invalid together with its tons of duplicates as Aaron judged the signal to noise ratio on the tracker to be too deteriorated. Apparently kde is growing this attitude of punishing those who post useless comments on the tracker by leaving unfixed those bugs that annoy them most.

I believe that https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=277010 is probably related.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224447 might be not or not completely as it appears to involve also other problems of the taskbar. Furthermore it appears to be fixable by the smooth tasks applet which apparently does not fix the main bug.

I use the firetray plugin with firefox and thunderbird. I have configured it so, that the tray icon apears anytime. If I click on it, the program should be minimized and removed from taskbar. The taskbar is configured with two rows. It happens really often (allmost every time), that after minimizing Firefox or Thunderbird, the items which are on the right side of the program in the taskbar are moved to the now free spaced (which is the right behavior) and the items which are on the left side are also moved to the now free space. So two taskbar widgets occupy one place, where the left one is underlaying of the right one. The first place in the taskbar is now empty. If I do the minimize and maximize on the tray button in slow speed, the maximize recovers the right view of the taskbar and the minimize causes this odd behavior. If I do a fast max/min switch, the taskbar is shown in the right manner with removed minimized FF/TB and all taskbar widget at the right place. I think, this is a very strange and annoying behavior, which exists since several KDE versions. Currently I use the 4.7.3. I hope that this will be fixed very soon. It seems, that it only happens, when sorting for workspace is activated.

Fixed since forever ago (4.7.3 apparently).
