Bug Description

I've updated my system from ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10-beta2. As a consequence of this update, ALL of my wireless and VPN configurations are lost. This means I have to reconfigure all of them again.

Your settings should be still available in gconf. You should be able to use the settings there to rebuild them as a workaround until this is fixed.

Yes, I indeed found them in gconf. However it would be nice to spare joe-average-user the scare :)
Is there a currently a work-around that will automatically restore my settings (better said: make them visible in network-manager)?

Thanks for looking into this!

There's not; this stuff should all get migrated to system-wide connections.

Something to try in gconf, in /apps/nm-applet, there is a "stamp" variable you may want to set back to 2. Kill off nm-applet first and restart it once that's done... but no garantees this will help :)

@mathieu-tl:

setting the value back to 2 doesn't work, because once I restart nm-applet, it overwrites the value back to 3.

Well, here setting the /apps/nm-applet from 3 to 2, and then restarting nm-applet ended up with all the wireless and VPN configurations properly imported.

The stamp value returned to 3 after nm-applet started but everything was nicely imported.

I experienced this problem too. Kinda hard to remember my wifi passwords... I'm really screwed...

I am running Kubuntu32bit on a netbook, and did the dist-upgrade.

These people also experienced it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859381

The wifi did not connect, then I went to go view the settings and I saw the settings for the wifi, then they went away!

I also do not have gconf, is there a work arround without gconf?

Install gconf with sudo apt-get install gconf-editor
Used it to change /apps/nm-applet from 3 to 2 and it worked. Thanks.

I think it is something related with the new "Elimination of the User Settings Service" described http://projects.gnome.org/NetworkManager/developers/migrating-to-09/ref-migrating.html

But I didn't find clear information for me, to understand how to change these settings...

Andreas, are you still seeing this issue or have you since re-created your wireless settings?

If you could take a backup of the gconf settings (there should be an option to do this is gconf-editor) for the /system/networking branch and send it to my by email (since that can contain some sensitive data, even though there shouldn't be any passwords), then I can try to fix that particular case for conversion -- there ought to be one small setting that has the convert fail.
