Hey fransschreuder1,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

Even I am having the same error after login. It doesn't cause any problem while working but popup on login is annoying.

I'm getting a similar error on login with my dual-screen setup using an Ubuntu card under 11.10:

Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors
none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:
Trying modes for CRTC 351
CRTC 351: trying mode 3200x1200@50Hz with output at 1600x1200@50Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 351: trying mode 3200x1200@50Hz with output at 1600x1200@50Hz (pass 1)

I have a simple xorg.conf, unedited since it was created by the nvidia settings tool.

Same here: A dual screen setup, Ubuntu 11.10, nvidia geforce 9300, the exact same message reported by James Stewart appears after each login (except it's "with output at 1680x1050@50Hz").
The only un-commented line in my xorg.conf (created with the nvidia X server settings tool) referring to some screen size that I could find is this:
    Option "metamodes" "CRT: 1920x1200 +1680+0, DFP: nvidia-auto-select +0+0"

1680x1050 is the native (and configured) resolution of the thinkpad own display, 1920x1200 is the 2nd display's resolution.

My machine was working fine. But after a sudden power outage i am getting this error and I am getting the screen stretched. I tried recovery mode also. But in vain.

Switched the nvidia display drivers to nouveau by the following commands.

  sudo nvidia-settings --uninstall
  sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*
  sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nv xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
  sudo apt-get install nvidia-common
  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Reboot.
Now my monitor is displaying properly with resolution of 1024 X 768.

I'd also like to point out that in some cases the dialog has a very long list of entries and close button is not visible. Average user can't be expected to alt-drag the window up to reveal close button so i think this is a serious usability issue.
