-----notes----

Debian's ticket #617588 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=617588) requested removal of snes9x-gtk. As of Oneiric it is now gone after a long tenure.

Reasons from Debian:

"Please remove snes9x:
- Orphaned since 1.5 years
- Dead upstream
- Low popcon
- Non-free, free alternative exists (zsnes)[see snes9x license below]"

This project is very much not dead and has, in fact, had a release a few months ago. The project is well-maintained and integrates nicely in Ubuntu.

Since Debian seems unwilling to host this project it would be best for Ubuntu to house it.

It does seem like these claims are dubious. Snes9x is still updated upstream and has a public github repository, while the zsnes upstream hasn't changed in almost 5 years. Claiming zsnes is an alternative clearly suggests personal preference, as it doesn't nearly approach the same accuracy as Snes9x, and a better (still free) alternative, bsnes, exists and would make a more applicable replacement.

Still, there's not much one can do when an opinionated maintainer makes a decision. I'm updating my PPA with packages for natty and oneiric now. I'll try to keep it more up-to-date since there are no official packages anymore.

Brandon, I don't know how well-acquainted you are with Ubuntu but it is possible to get new packages published in the software center without having to wait for the next 6-month cadence. Would that be easier?
