Bug Description

Version log:
Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic 3.0.4
Release:
Description: Ubuntu 11.10,Release: 11.10

I have weird colors on my webcam after fresh install of Oneiric. It didn't happen in Natty. I don't think it's a cheese bug but a kernel bug since gstlaunch-0.10 gives the same result. No problem whatsoever with Camorama, Guvcview or VLC, only with applications that take the image directly from gstreamer (that's why I filed the bug here). I have updated the video drivers from linuxtv.org and tried different solutions, but no luck.

I have added the bug to libv4l because I think that's where the real problem lies. The solution to this problem is quite simple. Type on terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libv4l
sudo apt-get install libv4l-0 libv4l-dev

Then you will have the libv4l updated and everything will be back to normal, at least in my case. Cheese and gst-launch-0.10 will start having normal colors again. However, there is something that I could not solve. It's the problem with Skype. Even if you update the 32 bits library (sudo apt-get install libv4l-0:i386), the color problem is not solved. However, with the help of v4l2ucp you can change the saturation pattern and get a much more reasonable output.

I have spent a long time trying to get my webcam working, so I hope this can help other people.

I really don't think this bug is a duplicate of Bug #888633 since the main problem there seems to be directly linked to a resolution pattern while here the problem persists even if the resolution is really low.

This bug is a duplicate of Bug #838739 and the two possibilities to solve the problem are:

- add the libv4l ppa using:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libv4l
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libv4l-0 libv4l-0:i386

- install v4l-utils from oneiric-proposed (version 0.8.5-3ubuntu2). You simply activate the oneiric-proposed tab and run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libv4l-0 libv4l-0:i386

You'll get a clear image without color distortion.
