Blender don't display any menu characters fonts

Bug Description
Binary package hint: blender
Running Blender 2.43:
1- the very first time running of Blender don't show any menu item characters
2- i close it with Alt+f4
3 - second time starting menu visualization and char fonts are ok
Calling the menu item help -> about Blender-> the about splash window disappear if the user move the mouse, it is very difficult to read the info.
