Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.17

Randomly, when using my BenQ Joybook 2100, the system will just freeze.

I suppose by viewing the logs it's a cd drive related problem. The model is MATSHITAUJ-840D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive.

Aparently, the problem is less frequent when there is a CD (I have been using a blank cd) on the drive.

Usually I know there will be a system freeze when
dmesg | grep hdc starts displaying
Mar 1 00:16:01 localhost kernel: [17184818.952000] hdc: drive not ready for command
Mar 1 00:16:01 localhost kernel: [17184818.952000] hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

Also switching to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) will get a terminal flooded by hdc: drive not ready for command just before the freeze

Hi nomad, I solved the problem by replacing the optical unit. Perhaps you should try the same.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04 on a Thinkpad R30. The hard drive light stays solid and if I flip over to another terminal window I get the hdc: drive not ready for command line over and over. Seems to happen randomly, but I know its happening when bootup takes longer and the hard drive light is solid with no actual hard drive activity happening. Also, when this happens there is a blank disc icon on the desktop, but there is nothing in the CD-ROM drive. I'm using the 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP kernel and both my bios and OS are up-to-date. Anyone have any ideas?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
