Bug Description

Bug existing in Feisty : 2.6.20-9-generic / i686 / DMA = off on the DVD device (same result with DMA = on)

Summary : I have no problem to burn DVD+RW but I meet the following errors when I try to burn an iso image on a DVD+R :

System

For info, I have others error messages with DVD-R :

Perhaps this bug is duplicate with previous (#34616, #40756, #15424, #16792) but I'm not sure because each bug has a particularity, some needs info, some are fixed (but not for me ;-) ) and what it is sure is that this bug is not recent and is not corrected yet (note : I am a Feisty user)

I wonder if these are all dupes as well. Tonight with feisty I tried to burn a DVD video and failed miserably. Went thru a few maxell DVD+R's, then a DVD+RW _worked_, then tried a few sony DVD+R's and failed again, it finally worked with a phillips DVD+R.

I use a vanilla kernel 2.6.18 self compiled, same one I used with edgy fine. I also tried a 2.6.20.2 kernel w/o change.

I should mention probably that I'm using k3b and I get no error probably due to the other bug which mentions that growisofs will not exit with error status even if it fails.

I'm also unable to write DVD (not even dvd+RW if I want to write them til the end). So I turned off X server and kdm and I logged in as root in tty1 ([ctr][alt][F1]) to avoid bug #75753 (cdrom ide drives wrong group https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/75753).
So in command line I did

growisofs -Z /dev/scd0=./kubuntu-6.10-dvd-i386.iso

and I had an error msg that is not in the k3b log becouse is a kernel error msg:

I dont have SATA drives but as far as I understand in kernel 2.6.20 there is no /dev/hdx, all ide and sata drives are scsi type drives (http://beranger.org/index.php?article=2696). I atached my lspci -vvn. I have IDE hd and IDE dvdrw, but with this kernel 2.6.20-13, my hd is /dev/sda and my dvd is /dev/scd.
The funy thing is if I do
growisofs -Z /dev/scd0=/dev/zero
Everything goeas fine!. Look:

I am surprised this important bug has not been treated yet. Moreover, I think this bug should be attached to the distribution and not k3b : it's a more general problem - perhaps kernel, perhaps user rights, perhaps dvdrtools ... (for info, burn of CDs and DVDRW are OK for me !).

MEN OF UBUNTU :
* please comment this bug,
* change its affectation - k3b to ...,
* Change its status : could you reproduce this bug, do you need more info, Is it in progress or is this bug rejected ? Do you have a temporarily work-around ? ...

Thank you for comments

Burner is Liteon SATA Model SH-16A7S-05 which has burned DVD+R's successfully before. I'm wondering if it is related to 2.6.20-16.

So, now k3b asks to test a 1x burn speed : indeed, the program reports a 2x burn speed, even if I choose Speed="Ignore" ?
I would like to force the test in 1x but impossible to find the option (choice between Auto, Ignore and 2x) ...

I have a similar problem with gutsy when trying to burn a DVD ISO image from Nautilus. The ISO image is good since I was able to watch it using VLC, and the burner should be no problem since I used to burn images under Windows, before re-installation. After a few minutes the system complains about an error (don't remember exactly and I prefer not to throw away another disc) and terminates writing, thus giving me an unusable disc (already three discs...). I can see that burned area is less than half the disc.

I had the same error burning a DVD ISO image in Gutsy with 2.6.22-14-generic kernel using k3b and cdrecord.
I tried several solutions unsuccessfully. Finally i changed the DVD media (i was using IG Dvds and changed to Verbatim DVD-R) and burn without problem.
Weird, really strange. I lost a lot of time trying to burn on the same media DVDs.

For what it's worth I have found from experience that this problem tends to be load related and affects both K3B and Brasero. For some reason neither of them are getting the priority they need when burning while the system is too heavily loaded.

For example I used to have this regularly happen with K3B on a dual core 64bit 2.0Ghz processor. I was running folding@home (which took one of the cores completely), Azureus and a lot of other light weight services like MPD and apache2 and samba. Once I turned off folding@home it stopped happening. Is there something that can be done to up the scheduling priority for burning programs?

Above was the basic error log message for the problem.

Anyway, did some more searching around and someone suggested trying burning at the minimum speed.

I'm using 16x discs, and had tried burning at 8x without success, but I set the record speed to 4x... and it worked!!

Therefore, is this a bug or is it a physical problem with the drive? Anyone else with the error message tried burning at the lowest possible speed?
