I'm not quite convinced this is a duplicate of those bugs. I have the same problem on all of my machines with:

---# lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Sandy bridge GPUs on the other hand are smooth as butter:

---# lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

while the Intel cards in the middle are a little choppy:
---# lspci -v |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Since this bug gets better with increasing graphics power, there is either a bug with the intel driver and lightdm/unity-greeter or the performance of unity-greeter needs optimizations for this case.

Marking the bug as confirmed. If you need any traces/logs for these graphics cards, I'm glad to be of assistance.

I also have a Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller, and i do see a slow down with the mouse pointer, logging in and on the desktop it look's like the refresh rate is lowered, windows look choppy but this is only when the touch pad..but when i plugin a usb mouse the problem goes away..

Alex Bachmeier (cebalrai) wrote :

Th slow down I'm experiencing is only on the lightdm screen.
We have pretty much all desktop environments installed (openbox, fluxbox, enlightenment, kde, gnome, lxde, xfce, unity, twm, evilwm, ...), which might be a contributing factor, with the list being quite large. With GDM, there are no such slow downs.

I removed lightdm and instlled GDM and I stil see mouse slow down with the touch pad but not the mouse,,i guess its a synaptics problem. its on a toshiba m305 laptop. I will try my acer 5315 latter in the day, before i file a new bug.

I have just upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04

My computer is almost unusable right now. I have to write at turtle speed. Otherwise half of the letters typed on the keyboard do not get written.

I have been using this computer with Ubuntu since about 5 years ago with no issues so far until today.

Hope a solution will be found soon. Otherwise I will have to revert back to a previous version.

After the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04, the desktop was painfully slow, the lightdm process took 100% on a single core. Applying the workaround from bug #1005642 fixed the problem for me. Still, a very serious issue!

My hardware: HP xv6200 workstation with 4x Xeon 2.8 GHz, NVIDIA graphics.

This affects me and is a dealbreaker. Clicking on anything in the greeter (username, password field, shutdown) takes anywhere between 2 and 30 seconds.

My hardware: Dell Latitude d830; 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

The workaround from bug #1005642 does *not* appear to fix things for me.

I found the problem causing most, if not all of the mouse problems on LightDM: The Ambiance and/or Radiance themes. To fix the problem, install the Ubuntu Tweak PPA "ppa:tualatrix/ppa", install Ubuntu Tweak, and go to Ubuntu Tweak<Tweaks<Login Settings. Change the GTK theme to Adwaita. If not installed, please install this theme in the Software Center.

Hope this solved all of your problems :)

Please note that if a different greeter theme is used in LightDM, the lag issue also stops. Unity-Greeter needs to be handled by LightDM as a .conf file, not through the other stuff 12.04 currently has to control configuration. Every LightDM greeter I use that is controlled by a .conf file works perfectly fine, with no errors.

I tested lightdm-gtk-greeter instead of unity-greeter. In /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf my system now has:

greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter

With this change the slowness is now gone. Therefore this bug seems to be in unity-greeter.
