Bug Description

From time to time the Ubuntu desktop just freezes on me, and I cant use the keyboard nor the mouse. I looks like it happens when I have many tabs open in Firefox, but it can also happen when I use other programs (like Gnome Image Viewer). When it freezes I might be able to use CTRL+Alt+F4 (when I press several times) so I can shut the pc off with "shutdown -r now" command. If not my only option is to turn the power off (I lose all my work when this happens).

I have a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1, and I have not installed the proprietary AMD graphic driver.

This also happened when I tried out the Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 on the same pc. But when I installed and used the xbuntu-desktop on Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 it worked just fine - so it must be something with the Unity stuff (or compiz). This have never happens before on my pc (I have used previous versions of Ubuntu on the same hardware).

Some of my hardware:
Intel Core 2 Quad
AMD Radeon HD 5870

I do not know how to read log files - but I can post them if you tell me where to look.

Thanks for reading.

The next time this happens, can you please reboot and attach here, using the button below 'Add attachment or patch' the files /var/log/syslog
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
Thanks

Hi

I have added the 3 files you asked for Fabio.

The problem I am reporting is easy to reproduce; I only need to open Gnome Image viewer and change pictures fast or zoom on large pictures - and it will freeze. Same happens when I open lots of tabs in Firefox from Liferea.

Thank you for checking my bug report.

Happened again for 3 time today. Last time I had Firefox with 13 tabs, Transmission running and Thunderbird when it froze hard (would not respond to CTRL+ALT+FX). Will add new logs (tar.gz file):

Feel free to ask if you need more information.

When the freeze happens next, please do this:

1. Switch to a virtual console: Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in.
2. Run:
    gdb `which compiz` `pidof compiz` | tee /tmp/compizbt.txt
3. At the (gdb) prompt type:
    bt
    quit
4. Revive your desktop by running:
    sudo restart lightdm
5. Attach the file /tmp/compizbt.txt to this bug.

Thanks in advance. I hope we can make debugging steps like these simpler in future :(

Hey,

I am sorry that it took me so long, but you know how it is: when you are waiting for a bug to happen - nothing happens.

So i got into gdb and createt that txt, but on the bt command gdb returned "no stack". I took a look into the file but i dont think it will be very helpfull to you.

I'll attach it here.

Same problem here on my laptop:

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce 9800M GT] (rev a2)

1) Desktop freezes after a while, not very long, could not even install synaptic package
   - both Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D

2) After hard reboot, installed some packages (ssh to be able to connect from remote) from a Virtual Console,
a was switching to immed. after login screen showed up.
After some time of installation:
As soon as I switched to where I assumed graphics, frozen again.
No Ctrl-Alt-Fx any more, seams like dead, but ...
ssh from remote works!

3) WIth my situation the compiz experiment requested earlier is pointless, since no compiz, no metacity yet, and freeze on lightdm.

Here a strange excerpt from /var/log/syslog, which I do not understand without studying Kernel code, however, maybe
somebody may know:

After my last posting, I found out, that installer went for nvidia driver - nvidia-common.

When I tried nvidia-common (not installed per default in 11.10), it did freeze my laptop as well and I removed it again.
(was not reported that time).

Removed nvidia using:
  sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-common nvidia-current nvidia-settings

Rebooted into 'nouveau' driver, which is working now for a longer time than before with nvidia. Will post further results.

So here the result of my last post:

Running now for the last 10h without problems or freezes.

Summary:

11.10: Installer picked nouveau for nvidia graphic and worked
(with problems mirroring external screens, but that's a different issue)
installation of nvidia-common (to try the external screen thing) led to
freeze of desktop within minutes (3D & 2D).

12.04: Installer picked nvidia-common with the same result as above.
Freeze of desktop within minutes (3D & 2D).
Removing nvidia-common and running nouveau helped against it.

Hope this helps,
Klaus

Hi Klaus,

I want to try the same thing as you did. I disabled the Nvidia Drivers under the "Additional Drivers" Option in Ubuntu and i am now working in 2D Unity Fallback Mode. How do I activate the Nouveau drivers? The software center tells me that they are already installed.

Or do i just have to enable 3d support somehow?

(Fonts and Windows are a little bit skew and hard to read right now)

Steffen (samolnes-7) wrote :

Since my last post Ubuntu have frozen about 4 or 5 times (less then before but still to much). I have not been able to run the suggested commands, because it didn't respond to CTRL+ALT+Fnumber (hard freeze, so had to turn off the power to reboot).

I still have a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 (have not installed the proprietary AMD graphic driver). Its fully updated, and no other PPAs (only installed some packages from apt-get).

@Fabio:
When I run “apport-collect 947433” I get the text “waiting to hear from Launchpad about your decision...” and nothing more happens.

@Daniel:
I tried your suggestion but did not get any txt file in tmp (tmp/compizbt.txt). When I typed “bt” I get the respond “no stack”.

I cant use Ubuntu when its so unstable, hope it will get fixed. I will try out other suggestions if you post it.

Thanks again.

I haven't tried ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1 yet as it is too slow to download at this point, but I experience random freezes as the above mentioned in a fully updated kubuntu 12.04 Beta 1. An external usbmouse works fine though. I've tried to move back to the 3.2.0-17 kernel and even though it seemed like it solved the problem for a while it happened there as well.

I'm on a HP pavilion dm1-4100 with amd all the way. No indications in any of the logs about what is happening as far as I can see anyways. Right now it is so bad it is almost impossible to do anything, but the strange thing is that everything runs smoothly up to the point when the freeze happens.

I also notice this problem in Firefox, going to Ctrl+Alt+F2 and running "killall firefox" (if the system is awake enough to run the command), seems to fix it until Firefox freezes the system again.
