PPPoE internet connection fails after an update for Feisty Fawn Beta

Binary package hint: pppoe

I installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Beta from the LiveCD.

When running of the LiveCD, and directly after the installation, the PPPoE connection is perfect and a breeze to set up (using 'pppoeconf').

Right after the installation, Ubuntu mentioned a lot of new updates and asked if I wanted to install them. I did and after a reboot (I guess because of a kernel update - can't remember exactly) the PPPoE connection failed. I can post the output of 'plog' if it helps (I am on Windows XP right now).

I installed Feisty Fawn twice from the LiveCD and encountered this connection problem twice. Does anyone have a clue if this is the updates fault or something else and if it will be fixed before the official April release?

I experienced the same issue.

I decided to investigate, and found that the IP address was in the right subnet, the DNS servers were correct, so I investigated the route and found this:

On system start my routing table looks like this:
64.230.197.93 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 eth0

there's no default route. This is what it looks like after poff && pon dsl-provider:
64.230.197.93 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 eth0
default * 0.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 ppp0

Trying to figure out how ubuntu starts it's ppp connection led me to /etc/ppp/pppoe_on_boot but I couldn't find a script that called it. Perhaps this is an issue with avahi or another package that modifies the kernel routing table. Either way, I wasn't able to find a cause for the missing default route.

The PPPoE connection still fails in Gutsy Gibbon Final (7.10) and this particular bug forces me to use Microsoft Windows for over half a year now.

I followed the help instructions on PPPoE in the manual (sudo pppoeconf and keep going), but no positive result.

I have what might be the same problem. pppoeconf works the first time then fails after 2 restarts. I undo the modifications of pppoeconf to /etc/network/interfaces and run it again. Works, then fails after 2 restarts.

I try from live CD and the Network manager works, so I reinstall ubuntu, network manager does not work. I go back to liveCD, network manager no longer works.

Let me add that I think it is a problem with avahi. Every time it works the only interface that shows up is "eth0", but when it fails it usually ends up stalling for a bit while it creates "eth0:avahi".
