https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/832465 gave a descriptive error message so I assume this is a new bug. I did "complete removal" of everything related to samba and tried to install samba4 but hit several missing dependencies, so will try again in a few days

Can't install samba.

Set importance to high at request from irc user TheLordOfTime:

it prevents the application from running correctly, and because it has a severe impact on the program for a (currently small) number of people.

I tried the obvious workaround of chmod 755 /usr/share/samba/setoption.pl and then reattempting the installation and I get some more errors, so it looks like packaging for samba4 still needs quite a bit of work.

smb.conf file as requested.

Runs fine with smbd.
Samba4 has the error.

I hope this is of some use.
I changed the permissions to get it across a windows network.

This bug is fixed in quantal, which will be 12.10. It's not fixed in
12.04.1.

From the package description:

 These packages contain snapshot versions of Samba 4, the next-generation
 version of Samba. These should be considered _experimental_, and should
 not be used in production.

I'm hoping to upload a fix for the LTS, but I haven't gotten to that yet.
