Bug Description

When attempting to set a powersave and powerdown
set of values for the console screen with the
setterm command, the laptop LCD backlight doesn't
turn off, and the screen becomes garbled untill a
key is pressed. The command used, as an example is:

setterm -blank 1 -powerdown powersave -powerdown 1

This behavior is the same for both apm and ACPI,
although the apm behavior can be changed by
setting the CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK option in the
kernel configuration, which causes the backlight
to turn off normally.

This behavior was noticed on an IBM ThinkPad R50
notebook computer.

This seems pretty clearly a kernel issue, and should have been reassigned some

The kernel currently has no support for screen blanking under ACPI, as far as I
know - there's no generalised BIOS call to do it, so your only hope is VESA
blanking code. It probably ought to be enabled by default for APM.

This bug has been flagged because it is old and possibly inactive. It may or may
not be fixed in the latest release (Breezy Badger 5.10). It is being marked as
"NEEDSINFO". In two weeks time, if the bug is not updated back to "NEW" and
validated against Breezy, it will be closed.

This is needed in order to help manage the current bug list for the kernel. We
would like to fix all bugs, but need users to test and help with debugging.

If this change was in error for this bug, please respond and make the
appropriate change (or email <email address hidden> if you cannot make the
change).

Thanks for your help.

Can we re-open this please?

I have a Gutsy server, new clean install which never switches the screen off when at the terminal. It is blanked, but the backlight is never switched off - wasting power and decreasing the life of the backlight.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . Please note that Alpha3 will be released within the next day or two so you many want to wait. You should be able to then test this bug with the new kernel on the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks!

Also, if the bug does still exist, can you please provide the following? It would really help with debugging.

uname -a > uname-a.log

cat /proc/version_signature > version.log

dmesg > dmesg.log

sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Thanks.

I've opened a new task against the actively developed kernel and am closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

Hi, I'm running Ubuntu Server 8.04.1, all latest updates on an HP Compaq nx8220 Notebook. Seem like this bug is still not fixed, as my console screen blanks, but the backlight stays on. Very annoying.

Note, that I had to use the vanilla Desktop Kernel, as the special server kernel does not work on machines without PAE (see Bug #151942)

While googling I found this link, which describes the exact same problem. Unfortunaltely I have no idea of kernel configuration, but it might help to check if "Power management options >> ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support >> Video" Kernel config is enables in the current Kernel.
The link: http://tinymicros.com/wiki/Laptop_LCD_Backlight_Blanking.

Some info on my config:

uname -a: Linux cardassia 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Kenel: Ubuntu 2.6.24-19.36-generic

Hi Luke,

This bug was reported a while ago and hasn't had any recent comments. Can you confirm if this is still an issue with the latest Jaunty release? Thanks.

I have since moved onto newer hardware, and no longer have access to the notebook this was reported against.

Marking invalid since I can't verify, but feel free to change if something else is more appropriate.
