Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hello!

My name is Johannes Tausch and I am from Austria. I am using free software since several years now. With Ubuntu I fixed my bug number one ;-)

Upgrading the system from edgy to feisty (beta) with the upgrade tool was quite comfortable, but it did not work.

During the installation of the packages an external window appeared several times (about 5 to 7 times).
The KDE-crashmanager reported: An unknown program (kdesktop_lock) broke down and left the signal 11 (SIGSEV). Backtrace was not possible. (no debugging symbols found)

It seemed to have no negativ effect to the upgrade.

I left the original (german) text of the message below:

[begin of message:]
unbekannt - Der KDE-Crashmanager
Allgemein:
Kurze Beschreibung
(no debugging symbols found)
Using host libthread_db library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
[end of message]

However, the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 finished with no additional error message.

After the first reboot the x server did not start.

A friend (Peter Liedler) helped me fix it. I had to reconfigure my xorgconf in a terminal session and selected the nv driver. The nvidia driver does not work in 7.04. I can reinstall it, but if I try to select the nvidia driver instead of the nv driver it produces the same error: The x-server cannot start because there are "no screens found".

The system runs properly with the nv driver. I thank those, who engineered ubuntu. You all have done a good job with feisty, just like with the others before.

kindly regards

Johny
