Comment 17 for bug 307645

I have been experiencing the same freezes on Linux Mint 8 Helena (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=37971). They happen several times a day while I'm doing simple tasks such as surfing the web with Firefox, checking e-mail on Thunderbird, browsing folders & files etc. The whole system hangs and, although the mouse pointer still moves, everything on the screen becomes unresponsive (nothing is clickable), and the only solution is to force restart the computer.

Right now I am trying the acpi=off grub solution offered by another user (viewtopic.php?f=49&t=37301). Freezes have disappeared so far, but with two collateral effects: windows from various programs have become slightly sluggish to minimize and maximize; and, more significantly, Thunderbird has become extremely slow and almost unusable.

Though I'm glad that the system has stopped freezing with the acpi=off option, I believe that this is not a proper solution (is it?). I hope that the actual cause of this bug can be found so that a fix can be included in some future system update.
