I Have the same problem on Ubuntu 9.10. My workaround:

Replace in $HOME/.openerprc

FROM:
pixmaps = /usr/share/pixmaps/openerp-client
share = /usr/share/openerp-client

TO
pixmaps = /usr/local/share/pixmaps/openerp-client
share = /usr/local/share/openerp-client
