Ubuntu 8.04 uses dash as default shell. The ./autogen.sh script is not compatible with dash. The 'function' keyword placed before a function name is not accepted.

Solution: simply drop the 'function' keyword.
Affected versions: 1.0.0, 1.1.0 and 1.2.0
