have more information about this:

when you plug the usb hard drive in and then boot ubuntu the system recognizes the drive and i can mount and unmount the drive with no problems
i have copied and written 700 meg files with no problems, it is only when i remove the usb cable and then plug it in the problems occur

i was asked if the dive had been removed safely under xp
i tried this and then plugged the usb hdd with ubuntu and the same problem occurred, it did not seem to make any difference

i repeated the experiment five times and the results were completely consistent as long as i plugged in the usb cable before i booted ubuntu it worked fine
