I purged this package and found no problems with Synaptic or Software Centre. However the update-apt-xapi process always used to cause my (single core Intel Celeron) computer to run so slowly as to be unusable (on Ubuntu 11.10).

I think this package should not be included in the default installation as it does not seem to provide any benefit.
