Thanks for clearing that up for me. It still leaves pointless controls in the System->Administration->Services dialog, though, as well as the init script that does nothing.
There must be a way to at least consolidate the GUI stuff so it does what it looks like it would do. Maybe have the Services dialog change the /etc/default/avahi-daemon status to "1" as well as start the service?
