Luke, I 100% agree with you, I have already been arguing that avahi daemon should just work like everything else. Your comment seemed to be suggesting that the services dialog should be modified to twiddle the /etc/default/avahi-daemon.

The question about "why dbus?" was for the avahi maintainers - I'm trying to figure out the rationale behind the current setup.
