problem was solved here: - Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Release Candidate, 64-bit - Broadcom driver: bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3 (shipped with Ubuntu)
Applied Jens Janssen's suggestion:
sudo iwconfig ethX power off
(ethX = your wireless network interface)
...and it worked! No more dropped connections or "dirty" workarounds with continuous 'pings'.
