I encountered the same problem when installing LyX 1.6.8 today on Ubuntu 10.10. Previous installations of previous versions of LyX on older Ubuntu versions went fine.

Running checkinstall with --fstrans=0 obviated the problem, though perhaps that is not a permanent solution.
