There is apparently no straightforward workaround in the current release (karmic). Supposedly the bug is fixed in the next release (lucid) and you could just upgrade to that, but it's still in development. I ended up dowgrading just the netbook-launcher and libnetbooklauncher packages to the versions from the previous release (jaunty, not hardy as I wrote above). You get the slightly older interface, but it works just fine. To do that, uninstall the current versions of those packages, then go to packages.ubuntu.com and search for their equivalents from jaunty and download and install them.
