I observed this on one of my 6.06 LTS systems a few days ago - running top showed that gnome-cups-icon was using 100% or nearly 100% of the CPU.
While there is a known workaround (deleting or renaming gnome-cups-icon), I feel that this should be fixed in this LTS release ASAP, since this IS an LTS release with many months of bugfixing support ahead of it. This is a bug that can cause severe degradation of system performance. I run 6.06 LTS on some systems precisely because I expect them to be stable.
Since apparently a bug fix exists for later releases, I would expect that a backport of this fix would be feasible.
