Confirmed. This is EXTREME bad juju. Nothing works. I, too, am afraid to shut down. This is libc6 2.7-9ubuntu1 on Hardy i386. The system went into the crapper during an apt-get update. The previous version of libc was 2.7-5ubuntu2.
