Confirm the bug in gcalctool version 6.6.0 in Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64-bit.
Tried the workaround suggested by Ypthor in post #2. Success. I now have a dot which is better than nothing.
(In Ubuntu 9.04 I never had this problem but in 10.10 and 11.04 I had it and replaced gcalctool with other calculator)
