Clearing the session didn't help, I removed the gnome-settings-daemon package (only gnome-control-panel required it and I removed it too) and reverted the changes to dconf as mentioned in the debian issue and now it works OK. I don't know why gnome-settings-daemon was installed and much less why it was automatically run at session startup.
