This is a tricky problem, but in my experience it is always a configuration
setting in /boot/grub/menu.lst
Especially the "map (hdX) (hdX)" command is useful.

It might well be that grub tries to boot windows from an ext3 install, it is
looking for an ntfs/fat system where there is none.
