There's already bug #385428 for unknown LVM metadata, but for that
submitter it's probable because the LVM itself is too old.

I just installed karmic beta1 on the default LVM setup on a 20 GiB
virtual disk. That worked fine, at least grub-probe didn't complain
about it.

So sda is the only disk in your system?
grub-probe always reads the LVM metadata on every disk it can find, not
only on the one you requested.
